In 2002, Imani Winds self-produced and self-funded their first CD, Umoja. Umoja, "unity' in Swahili, is representative of the diverse repertoire Imani Winds offers. This award winning and ground-breaking disc features music from the standard repertoire such as the quintets by Francaix and Villa-Lobos, modern day classics by Astor Piazzolla and Paquito D'Rivera that represents the Latin revolution that has infiltrated classical music and one of the most innovative voices in composition today, the soulful music of IW's very own Valerie Coleman.

A major component of Imani Winds is the two resident composers who are shaping the future of woodwind quintet repertoire. Valerie Coleman and Jeff Scott's music is giving a whole new perspective of what 'urban classical music' means. The influences of living in an urban environment lends to their inclusion of multicultural elements in an otherwise western-based repertoire. In addition to pioneering new works of our own, Imani Winds has commissioned works by Fred Ho, Franco D'Rivera and has had pieces dedicated to them from such composers as Vijay Iyer, Annette leSiege, Dan Cooper and Dan Loeb.
