CD RELEASE FEB. 5 @ Joe's Pub New York, "The Classical Underground"

Imani Winds joins the label Koch International Classics in the release of their new album, "The Classical Underground". This album marks the first internationally released album after Imani Winds' self-produced "Umoja". "The Classical Underground" is already making waves in the industry as Koch's Pick of the Month and is due to hit the stores nationwide Jan. 26. With guest artists Rene Marie, jazz vocalist and Rolando Morales on percussion, it has new sounds previously unrelated to the woodwind quintet. We are happy the album also features the majority of works by our composers, VColeman and Jeff Scott. MARCH 1 Imani Winds with PAQUITO D'RIVERA, World Premiere of "Kites Over Havana" at ALICE TULLY HALL

We are excited to once again collaborate with legendary saxophonist/clarinetist, Paquito D'Rivera in a concert that will premiere the newly commissioned work, "Kites Over Havana" for Imani Winds plus solo clarinet and piano. D'Rivera's pianist, Alon Yavnai, will join Imani Winds for this exciting new piece that is sure to be a diamond in the quintet repertoire. The work is a unique blend of D'Rivera's nostalgia for his native Cuba with resonant sounds that allows the listener a contemporary experience of the travels and memories of D'Rivera's career. The premiere of the work will take place at the award-winning Fontana Chamber Arts Concert Series in Kalamazoo, MI on Feb. 17 and continue on to make its New York premiere March 1 at Alice Tully Hall in New York City.

Personal notes:

Toyin Spellman getting married!

Wedding bells will be heard soon from Imani Winds' oboist Toyin who will be getting hitched to her percussionist fiancé, Javier Diaz, Labor Day weekend 2005. Imani Winds will be present to celebrate this union. They also helped celebrate the wedding of Tiffany Ellis (sister of bassoonist Monica) and Calvin Butts in a wedding ceremony that included the guest appearances of Alvin Ailey dancers to Wynton Marsalis, a nice article in the New York Times and a complete show dedicated to them on Real Weddings on the Oxygen network!!

Valerie Coleman commissioned by Hartford Symphony

Flutist and founder of Imani Winds, Valerie Coleman (known as VColeman compositionally speaking) was commissioned by the Hartford Symphony. The piece "The Painted Lady" for soprano and orchestra, received rave reviews and has been invited to be performed at Carnegie Hall in fall 05. For the review: Click Here: Check out "Connecticut Entertainment - Movies, Music, Dining News from The Hartford Courant - CONCERT REVIEWS" Many congrats to Valerie!!
